Motorists in Sweden no longer have to swipe a credit card and enter a PIN number to pay at the pump.

Thanks to new pay-by-plate technology introduced by Quebec-based Couche-Tard on April 22, Swedish customers can now drive onto the forecourt, fill up with fuel and pay for it entirely through their phones via the Circle K Easy Fuel app.

The news makes Circle K the first fuel retailer to offer the service across a national network.

The plate recognition technology is similar to license plate readers currently used on toll roads and in parking garages across Europe. Future plans include similar launches throughout Circle K’s global network, which includes more than 7,100 c-stores in the United States and 2,100 in Canada, within the next few years, according to CSP Daily News.
